Union Pacific (UP) purchased Electro-Motive Division (EMD) SD40 diesel locomotives in 1966 (UP 3000-3082) and again in 1971 (UP 3083-3122). The 123 roster members included eight units (3040-3047) that were originally EMD testbed SD40s built on shorter (SD35) frames and several featured flared radiators that did not transfer to regular production SD40s. The units included dynamic brakes and low short hoods. UP would follow up its SD40 buying with even more SD40-2s beginning in 1972.
